That first drive in a new GTA is a little ritual. Find a car, turn up the radio and miss the turn you were supposed to take. Suddenly, the mission can wait.
With GTA VI getting closer, it is the promise of those unscheduled detours that has our attention. Rockstar's official site lists 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Jason and Lucia at the centre of a story across Leonida.
A bigger world, with more reasons to stop
In Edge's new studio preview, published on GamesRadar+, Leonida is described as roughly twice the size of GTA V's map, with substantially more interiors. Those are preview claims, rather than measurements we have tested ourselves.
The interesting question for us is what happens between destinations. A huge map is exciting, but the best detour is one that gives you a story to tell afterwards.
The people on the pavement have a say
Edge reports around 600,000 character animations and personality traits that influence how bystanders react. In one demonstration, staring at a man ended with his dog chasing Jason.
That is the sort of tiny disaster GTA does so well. You start by looking around and finish wondering how a quiet walk became your evening's main event.
Even the weather joins in
The preview describes storms developing in the distance, surfaces drying at different speeds and wind affecting boats and aircraft. Day and night cycles are longer, too.
Our first instinct? Leave room for a sunset drive. Sometimes the screenshot you keep is from the moment when you stopped trying to get anywhere.
A getaway could need more thought
According to Edge, police gather identifying details such as clothing and weapons. It also describes a Criminal Profile that influences the story, alongside choices affecting Jason and Lucia's relationship.
We are keen to see how those ideas feel together when players get their hands on the game. A preview can show promising moments; launch is when everyone starts finding their own unexpected combinations.
Keep the excitement, skip the guesswork
Long feature lists are travelling fast online. We have kept this roundup to details we could trace to the published preview and Rockstar's official pages. It is a news roundup, not a review or a guarantee of how every system will work in the released game.
If your console, headset or connection needs attention, our launch-night checklist is a good place to start. Get the fiddly jobs out of the way, then enjoy the countdown.
